Teeth.

Tuesday saw me up at 0430hrs and out on the boat on Llangorse lake. I love this place. Mid-week its usually pretty quiet. With the pike hopefully just starting to stuff themselves after breeding in the shallows.

With the 9ft #10 orvis helios and outbound short sink tip strung up, the echo was telling me 11deg C. By the time the fish started to show interest, the temp had reached 13deg C with a high sun (burned my hand). From 1100hrs – 1600hrs I think i caught 10 jacks, best was probably 7lb.

Show time.

Well, after many completely fruitless early season attempts, when the river should be on song, I finally get a good day on the upper usk last sunday. Pulled this guy from the first run on the 2nd cast on a #16 copper john.

Same very light hatch of LDO knocking about. Still not seen a march brown on the river this season. Certainly not seen a worthy rising fish yet.

Best fish was this close to 2lb nympher.  I was snapped by a better fish within 5 seconds of hooking it on a small nymph.

Just replaced all my river reels with two size II orvis mirages in black and gun smoke with 6 spare spools (I have a lot of lines). Just fancy having a drag on my river reels for one. The II allows even the thickest #5 lines to fit on the spool with ample backing with no fuss. Im using them for #3 – #5 lines.

Also treated myself to a 9ft #4 tip flex helios 2 and a 10ft #3 tip flex helios 2. In a few months I’ll get a review together of all the new kit. In the mean time, check ebay for a sage 3200 and a danielsson nymph going cheap!
