A few weeks ago in late october just after the salmon season finished I had the opportunity of demonstrating at the bi-annual AAPGAI open day at http://www.caerberis.com/ hotel Builth Wells, Wales. It was really refreshing to be part of a newbie team of demonstrators displaying game angling skills for the first time.
I chose to explain how I fly fish for saltwater species from a sea kayak demonstrating the equipment needed, saftey aspects and fishing techniques that I use. Sharon’s sea kayak gave the opportunity to make an interesting comparisson to my purpose built fishing sea kayak (ocean kayak prowler big game).
Clothing, anchor use, stability, storage capacity, transportation, tackle, sonar etc were all covered. Karl Humphries explained how he fishes for pike from his kayak, demonstrating the use of a boga grip to hold the pike safely in the water (not much room in the kayak). Karl also talked about using the kayak at night and the proper fit and use of a dry suit.
Thank you to Karl for the organisation and everyone who helped with the loading and unloading of the yaks, they are quite a weight. It was a great day, the weather held and we were well catered for as always at the hotel. Thanks also to Paul who kindly gave me his room which made the whole weekend so much more enjoyable. Congratulations to all those who passed assessments over the weekend, its not easy!
I think ive got the bug now, cant wait to perform another demo next year (if im allowed).
